Why is it important to take out pet insurance?

There are a number of reasons why you should take out pet insurance:

If you are still unsure, below we explain it.

What documentation is required to take out pet insurance and why it is a good idea.

1

Pet owner’s data

Just like with other insurance products, when taking out pet insurance an insurance company needs the policyholder’s data.

Therefore, as the legal owner of the insured pet, you must provide us with your personal and contact details, as well as the bank account number that the premium payment will be direct debited from

2

Your pet’s details

Similarly, when you take out pet insurance, you will be asked to provide the date of birth of your dog or cat to ascertain their age range.

3

Microchip number

In this regard, one of the key pieces of information required by SegurCaixa Adeslas is the pet’s microchip number.

In the past, the autonomous communities were responsible for regulating microchip implementation. However, following the entry into force of Law 7/2023, of 28 March on protecting the rights and welfare of animals, it has been regulated at national level.

Known as the Animal Welfare Law, this regulation sets forth the following with regard to microchips:

  • Dogscats and ferrets, as well as birds, must be identified using a microchip and ringed from birth.

  • The microchip must be approved and have a unique code registered in the Spanish Pet Identification Network (REIAC) database.

  • Failure to microchip a pet is considered a serious offence and carries a fine ranging from €10,000 to €50,000.

Therefore, if you own a dog or cat they need to be microchipped by a vet.

  • The microchip is implanted subcutaneously into the left side of the neck.

  • But don’t worry; the animal won’t be harmed or bleed. This device, which is the size of a grain of rice, won’t cause any allergic reactions or side effects either.

The microchip is like an ID card for our pet. It lasts for almost the entire life of the pet and contains an identification number linked to its name, date of birth, weight, etc., which is useful in particular in the event of theft or loss as well as to combat pets being abandoned.

If you are looking to insure your dog or cat, you will need to have the microchip number. We will ask you to include it in your pet insurance documentation when you take out the policy. The microchip number can be found on your pet’s health record, which we have more information on below.

As mentioned already, you will need to have the animal’s Health or Veterinary Record to hand to find the microchip number required to take out the insurance policy.

The pet registration card is used to keep a thorough and up-to-date record of the health of a dog or cat. And, while there may be different versions, a Health or Veterinary Record usually includes the following information:

  • Pet owner’s data. Name and surname, National ID card number, contact telephone number and address.

  • Pet’s data. Name, species and breed, date of birth, sex, colour, height and weight, etc.

  • Microchip number. The document also contains the microchip code assigned to the animal, which is like an ID card used to identify a pet, among other uses.

  • Vaccinations. The vaccination record also includes the vaccines administered to the animal and the vaccination schedule. Among the most common vaccines are multivalent, rabies and distemper vaccines in dogs and trivalent and leukaemia vaccines in cats.

  • Deworming. Similarly, a Health or Veterinary Record lets you keep track of whether or not parasites have been eliminated in your pet.

  • Other data of interest. Furthermore, the document contains information on the tests and operations performed on the pet, whether it has been sterilised, whether it has any allergies, any medication it takes, etc.

Of course, all this information must be confirmed by a vet, whose name, registration number, signature and clinic stamp must be recorded.

If you are insuring your pet through SegurCaixa Adeslas, there is no need to enclose a Health Certificate and Declaration for your dog or cat with your pet insurance documents.

This is a document signed by the policyholder in which, as the owner of the pet, he/she declares, among others, that his/her dog or cat:

  • Has not been involved in any accident or suffered an illness prior to taking out the policy.

  • Has not sought veterinary care, other than vaccination or deworming, within the last 12 months.

To summarise, when taking out the policy you will need to provide the following documentation for pet insurance:

  • Your personal data.

  • Your dog or cat’s data.

  • You pet’s microchip number.

By providing this information, you can choose the type of pet insurance that best suits your needs and avail of the services provided by an extensive network of vets all over the country.
